So today is Heat Awareness Day and it feels like the coldest spring that we have had in a while. Soon however, the sun will be shining down and we will spend days either playing or working outside in the heat.
Heat exhaustion and dehydration due to heat are some of the leading weather-related killers in the United States and Canada.
Extreme heat is defined as at least 2-3 days of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 degrees Celsius. In extreme heat, evaporation is slowed, and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. This can lead to death by overworking the human body. Remember that extreme heat can occur quickly and without warning and that older adults, children, and those who are ill are at greater risk from the impact extreme heat.

So Here are today’s Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Heat Awareness Day:
- When we are under an EXTREME HEAT WARNING:
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Find air conditioning when possible. Know places in your community where you can go to get cool.
- Keep your home cool by covering the windows and using fans.
- Avoid strenuous activities.
- Watch for the signs of heat illness, such as HEAT CRAMPS, HEAT EXHAUSTION and HEAT STROKE
The summer heat is welcomed after a long cold winter, but as the slogan goes, Be Aware and Stay Safe in the Heat.
